The Nautical Astrolabe was a great advance as a navigation instrument for maritime routes. Through the experience of the navigators it acquired a definitive form. Measuring the height of the stars we obtain the Latitude.
This Portuguese nautical astrolabe (1550-55) was owned by the skipper of a small Dundee ship, A. Smyton. The original is in the Art Gallery and Museum in Dundee, Scotland.
The two sides of the pendant are identical.
Non-functional instrument.
