H105 Astrolabe of Rojas
Brooch or pin reproduction of the astrolabe of Rojas.
16th century: the astrolabe reaches its peak of popularity.
The Spanish mathematician and astronomer Juan de Rojas y Sarmiento exposes and spreads in Europe the Orthographic Projection (1550).
This projection was successfully applied to the construction of a new type of astrolabe, providing a great advantage over its predecessors, as it was valid for any latitude.
H106 Planispherical Astrolabe
From the Greek "star finder", the astrolabe was introduced in Europe by the Arabs.
It became an essential tool for astronomers, astrologers and surveyors. Among its many uses are the location of the positions of the stars, the determination of local time, calculation of geographical latitude, height measurements or azimuths.
H107 Nautical Astrolabe
It is the simplification of the planispheric astrolabe. Through the experience of the navigators it acquired its definitive form. Measuring the height of the stars it obtains the Latitude.
This Portuguese nautical astrolabe (1550-55) was owned by the skipper of a small Dundee ship, A. Smyton. The original is in the Art Gallery and Museum in Dundee, Scotland.
