H106 Planisferic Astrolabe

Brooch or pin, reproduction of a planispheric astrolabe. From the Greek "star finder", this instrument was introduced in Europe by the Arabs.

It became an essential tool for astronomers, astrologers and surveyors. Among its many uses are the location of the positions of the stars, the determination of local time, calculation of geographical latitude, height measurements or azimuths.

H108 Nocturlabe

To measure the night hours, man learned by observing the stars: certain boreal constellations revolve around the North Star about once a day, as if a large handle were marking the hours on a 24-hour celestial sphere.

This Nocturlabe or Horologium noctis is European, from the middle of the 17th century.

H110 Perpetual Calendar

This vertical sun disk has two faces. The one of the high clock and the one depicted, a perpetual calendar.

The calendar consists of three rotating discs on the base disc with scales for dates and for the age of the moon, among others.

Of French origin (1650-1700) it is in the Maritime Museum, London.
